| The Secret of Rumour Island |
Posted by: Haggis | Comments (9) |
Since posting those pictures sent in by Steve Purcell, the Internet has been exploding with rumours about a possible fifth Monkey Island game. Even big sites, like Slashdot, Guardian Unlimited's Gamesblog, and Kotaku have picked up on the rumour. But should you really get excited? Let's analyse this rumour and see if we can't put it to rest.
First of all, the source of the 'Monkey Island 5 is in production' rumour, Rumor Reporter, is not watertight. But, but, but, what about those pictures? Well, it could be a coincidence that Steve Purcell sent those images just after we posted about that rumour. But, butbutbutbutbut surely those pictures, that are unrelated to any existing or cancelled piratey project must be of a new Monkey Island game?! Well, take a look at this quote from an interview we did with Steve Purcell:
As far as a Monkey Island movie, I'm probably not allowed to confirm or deny in print for numerous, obscure contractual reasons. Although I'd love to share some completely random unrelated pirate images I have lying around.
When looking at it like this, it would seem that those might be the pictures. In other words, Steve had them lying around, and they're not related to a Monkey Island game that's supposedly being produced as we speak. The final nail in the coffin of this rumour would then appear to be this Mojo news post from 2005, which talks about this Monkey Island movie, which Steve Purcell worked on, as well as a certain Tony Stacchi. The latter has some concept art in his portfolio. Go ahead and click on that link, then look at the images in the second row from the bottom. Especially note the fifth and seventh from the left, and compare those to the images Steve Purcell sent in. Note the similarities in LeChuck's hat, and the not entirely dissimilar sea lizards.
So it would appear that the rumours are a proverbial storm in a glass of water. But since I'm not one to crush anyone's dreams, just see this as a possible alternate explanation of recent events. |

Hi all,
I just checked Tony Stacchi website as mentioned in the article. especially interesting are also the names of those images. check the status bar in your browser to see the names. all those images start with "MI..." and some even have the character names in them... so I think it's not far of to say that they at least have something to do with MI.
nevermind if this is already known

| Steve Purcell is already busy with those Sam and Max episodes, and they're probably going to work on "Season Two" pretty soon.

I have only been a fan a year and there have been rumours. Slow down, then loads, then none etc.
But if a game is ever in production, there will be rumours of course, so one might be true. One day...

If it's in print ... it MUST be true.
Sarcasm aside, is there really more fervor about MI5 nowadays than seen in the past five years? I don't really feel the difference.

That link was just to prove I'm not making things up (and for the Germans out here, of course). I could translate it if anyone's interested but it clearly says "according to worldofmi, LucasArts is working on a fifth MI"
I don't know if they really haven't understood what's going on or if they're just exaggerating, though.

Just thought I'd tell you guys that some German sites keep twisting the facts about this issue. One even reported that worldofmi.com has announced MI5 and even posted Steve's pictures as concept art for the game...

| Noone really expected it to be true, rumours like this have been around for years. Deep in our hearts we all know really LucasArts will never make another. Oh well hope springs eternal.
