Your idea for a Monkey Island sequel or spin-off

Postby Hande » Sun Jan 31, 2010 4:33 pm

Hey, we've had a load of these sort of topics in the past but I wanted to sort of bring it back again.

Honestly, after Tales technically anything could happen to Monkey Island. There could be another new game next year or ten years from now. I don't really have any new stories in my head which is funny because a new Monkey Island sequel was something I was thinking about all the time at one point. I'd still want Haggis McMutton and some other CMI characters to come back if a new game were made but it's always hard to first come up with a new plot and then keep it fresh all the way through.

In the mean-time though I think TellTale and/or LucasArts ought to keep the MI name relevant with some sort of a spin-off. Nothing grand, just something to remind people that MI exists. Guybrush isn't exactly Mario but I'd see the potential for a crazy boat-racing title, or maybe an expansion on the ship-to-ship combat we saw in CMI. Maybe a Monkey Kombat fighting-game that would actually function more like a real fighting game (dispensing with the Ook, Eep, Ach command and battle-stance system). Or maybe just a short adventure game where you control some other character from the series. Say... Wally for instance. Like I said, it could be short, maybe two or three chapters with a more comedic than plot-driven tone.

I really see that potential for this sort of stuff, MI is very rich with interesting characters, details and concepts to revisit in a more concentrated form.

Well, what do you think?

I dunno how you guys feel about this but, spin-off wise? How about the adventures of young Guybrush.
We really don't know where he came from or why he wanted to be a pirate, so why not? It might ruin the mystery of his character, but there could be some really funny moments in it.

Other than that, what might be cool is a adventure/sandbox hybrid where Guybrush and crew travel to a different island of your choice and the adventure part starts on the island and when your done with the islands quest you move onto the next island.

Well, I personally would love to see a Morgan LeFlay spin-off game, as I have mentioned in various threads both here and over on the Telltale forum. A Morgan adventure game would, of course, be preferable, but this character could virtually fit into game genre. I mean, I could picture a Morgan LeFlay adventure game like ToMI, an action game like 'Jedi Outcast', an action-adventure game, a stealth game like 'Beyond Good & Evil', 2D platformer like 'Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure' (or 'Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project' or 'Trine'), a 3D platformer like 'Ratchet & Clank' or 'Insecticide', even an RPG like KotOR, or an action-RPG like 'Torchlight'. The character has so much potential and, as I've said, can be used in almost any game genre. I hope that the character if Morgan is utilized, whether it be by Telltale themselves, or even in a fan game.

That's kinda interesting. I've never thought of it like that - maybe because she's such a new character I have longing to see older characters make return appearances. Funny thing is, unless you're in the main cast (Guybrush, Elaine, LeChuck, Voodoo Lady, Herman) or a fan favorite (Stan, Murray) it's really hard to get a second appearance in a Monkey Island game (a few exceptions: The Men of Low Moral Fiber, Wally, LemonHead).

Yeah, that is a good point. But Morgan (as well as Winslow) was actually really popular among the MI audience. The reception really was quite positive, and there was an incredible amount of fanart for the character (as well as appreciation threads). So, I wouldn't be surprised if Morgan was featured prominently in a future Monkey Island game, along with Winslow. Perhaps, from there, she could become a fan favourite, depending on whether the writers give the character the right development.

Yes, Morgan was quite a fan favorite.
Maybe spoilers

A lot of people thought that Guybrush should've ditched Elaine and ended up with Morgan  I completely disagree. Guybrush and Elaine belong together, though i DO wish that Elaine treated him with a tiny bit more respect. Dominic Armato thinks so too :D He says that Guybrush and Elaine are MEANT to be forever.

I still hope they will make more Monkey Island games.
Hopefully it wont be that long for the next Monkey project.
They have other projects going on other than MI's.
Pirate: Guybrush Threepwood? That’s the most ridiculous name I’ve ever heard!
Guybrush: Well what’s your name?
Pirate: Mancomb Seepgood.

Since I consider Curse, Escape and Tales as spin-offs, I would love if LucasArts hires Ron Gilbert once again and make the true MI3.

There are many people on this site who would disagree with you there. I am not one of those people. I welcome someone else who supports my view on the sequels :)

Face it people Monkey Island 2 is the best one :P

Glad to hear I'm not the only one.

P.S: I'm not saying that Curse, Escape and Tales are bad games, though. I just consider them spin-offs.
