Who should be the project leader?

Postby Monkey Face » Tue Jul 16, 2002 12:47 pm

Here, you can vote for the project leader. If you want to included on the poll, just post your name and I'll update it.

Remember, don't vote straight away because someone you may want to vote for may appear soon.

And being project manager is a huge responsability so think carefully before saying you want to be one.

It is obvious that we need a project manager to make that final decision.

Good luck everyone!

P.S. Vote for me and you'll get 'Good Times and Free Grog!'

Monkey Face, the fact that you've even made this post indicates you'd be a poor leader.

For starters, the community at large seems to have rejected my proposal of even having a project leader; you're behaving here as if they haven't. Additionally, you can only vote once on this polling system, so the poll becomes worthless everytime a name is added, as someone who voted for you or me might prefer a third choice better but now can't vote for them.

Furthermore, you were off in the game engine thread selecting an interface and graphical style before you'd even decided what kind of game it was going to be; what sort of loony planning is that? Plus your story suggestions are riddled with cliche.

The above is honesty and is not intended to insult, though I understand it may upset you. Even if I didn't want the position myself I wouldn't be happy with you as leader.

I'm starting to wonder if this original game project was such a good idea afterall.

There are a few topics, where everyone wan'ts their own idèas for the game.

If they wanted two project leaders (that is what I seem to remember at least)

Let it then be two project leaders.

Discuss the game, and "hire" artist and programmers, to help you.

If the game is being deleveloped like this (many topics with no real information)it would probably never finish.

It is obvious that I'm not going to win the vote besause it seems that I'm not very popular with most of you.

But if you want my opinion Matt Kelly, I think you're taking this way too serious. We're supposed to be having fun here. Not fussing over the smallest little idea that's not perfect.

First, we sould pick the project leader who'll make the final decision. Then, the story line should be chosen. Next, we chose the game engine which will work well with the game. Then the script and the graphics should be chosen. After that that we should get the sounds, voices and background music. Finally, we should do the final touches like testing and editing.

Sure I'm taking this seriously and having high standards; but what better way of ensuring a high quality game, particularly if I were the project leader?

Ok, shut up both of you. We're going to compromise and if you don't like, tough s***.

Matt, you're project leader, but you're not completely supreme. The members of the forum make up stories and vote for they're favorites. You just decide what you think is the best out of those. You can be over ridden by 2/3 majority vote against a decition. You also appoint different teams for art, programing and what not.

Now lets get crackin!

Hello? Are you the boss here, murry? Now, if we haven't decided on a project leader and leader for the different teams, then I don't even want to be part of this "project". I've noticed that the high ambitions of some of us are constantly colliding with the will of others to just create a story and "then we will see..." Well, if it continues like this, I think it's better not to continue.

Sorry Haggis, you are perfectly right. We should first get organized first.

Ok, here's how I think we should do it. We elect a leader, then he sets up units for character/level designs(I think Paco and Dank will be good for this) and programing(Haggis, Hax and who ever else is good with it). After that is set up, forum members make story suggestions, select out top 5 picks and the Leader(who ever it is) decides the best one. Then after that is done, we flesh out the story line, leader makes ajustments, characters and levels are made, then it's all programed.

Of course we need a dead line and I suggest September 30, 2003.

What do you think?

Well, I was more thinking of choosing a project leader first. Then, forum members will apply for different positions, and the project leader will choose suitable candidates to lead each department. Those people (I'm thinking of a lead artist, lead programmer, lead tester, a writer, and a musician) will act as "talent scouts", searching for suitable people for their department. Once they each have a complete department they feel happy with, they report to the project leader, who then assigns tasks to the different departments. The department leaders will indicate how long it will take for them to complete the tasks. The project leader will then make a schedule, and he or she can begin managing the project, while the department leaders will be reporting to the project leader with important information. This should work.

No raVe, I was just making a suggestion. That's what I think would work best for the organization of the project. There is a big difference between SHOULD and WILL. Namely SHOULD is not an order; It is implicitly a suggestion.

OK: So we've decided we've decided we definitely want a project leader?

If noone contests my having this position in the next day or two, I'm it and I shall set about organising a design team. If they do, we will have a poll of those contesting it and the one with the most votes wins. Design team is all we need right now; art and programming teams could be left sitting around for weeks waiting for us to tell them what we want them to do, so no point in forming them till they have work.

Well I've decided to drop out and since Matt Kelly is the only one standing it looks like there's no use running this poll, unless someone else would like to stand.

Well, if you want to see the fan game finish AT ALL, much less be professional and interesting, you need a good project leader. Myself, I'm willing to back Matt Kelly, not because I've seen any examples of his work, but because he has the willingness to say 'that's a really bad idea', set concrete goals, etc.
