Time-Travel Anomaly?

Postby Hande » Sun Jan 31, 2010 4:51 pm

Okay, has anyone else ever been bothered by the fact that travelling between the islands in Part 2, even though it's always sunny and bright on Booty and Phatt Island, it's always dark on Scabb. It's something that crossed my mind in when playing Tales as well. Flotsam is the only island we've seen so far both in day and night time (yes, it was night on Monkey Island in Curse as well but the only part of the island we saw was the Carnival).

Well the answer to "Why is it always night-time on Scabb?" is probably "Because it would have taken too long to redraw the scanned backgrounds again in day-time, plus it would have taken more disc-space". I get that - but could there be other potential reasons for this anomaly. Is there some strange curse over Scabb that makes it look like it's night even when it's daytime? Or is Captain Dread's map inaccurate and Scabb is actually located far enough from Booty and Phatt that it's always dark by the time they reach it?

Well it's very unlikely to these three islands to be within distance of each within one day, but then I suppose it's very quickly to traverse each one. I'm guessing the only reason is disk space. And I guess with the new games, it is to be more authentic.

Dread doesn't seem to be a guy in a rush, just take a look at swirves he goes through while sailing to his destination. :) Well, then again the Jolly Rasta is a very small boat so I guess it would be easily thrown of course if there was a strong wave.

What a depressingly rational explanation. :P

I always put it down to the fact that Scabb stayed dark because it's atmosphere worked better if it was dark.

Same with Flotsam...it works better as dark in later chapters, but in the relatively innocent opening chapter it works better as light.

It never really occured to me before though...

Well you have a point there, I guess Scabb wouldn't have looked as cool in the day time (and I generally like islands in Monkey Island that are set to night better :) ). Flotsam looked really good both ways since it had that tropical flair when it was daytime and then that darker tone in Chapter 4.

I guess it all depends on the original concept work done for each Island. Scabb, obviously due to the general ominousness of that part of the game, was envisioned to be dark, whereas Phatt was light :)
