"Monkey Island" (Spoilers)

Postby pieces of eight » Sun Jun 20, 2010 3:40 am

There were several things about this game i didnt like but I think my biggest problem was that they didnt actually go to Monkey Island. In my opinion it somewhat makes the game feel incomplete.

Monkey Island 2, arguably the best Monkey Island game, never features Monkey Island. There is no need to go to Monkey Island in the games, because the game isn't about Monkey Island, it's about Guybrush, LeChuck and Elaine.

I assumed thats where they ended up when Guybrush was caught in Lechucks curse at the Carnival at the end of MI2

But I guess that only shows up in the retcon from MI3...

Yeah, with the MI3 retcon it is Monkey Island, but otherwise you don't really understand where you are. The MI2 ending leads you to believe you are at a carnival and are actually part of a child's imagination.

No, the game would have suffered from trying to shoehorn Monkey Island into the storyline.

I thought the Gulf of Melange provided a nice and refreshingly new set of islands and it didn't bother me at all that they didn't seem to have any connection to the previous games. This is undoubtedly what gave the Telltale crew the freedom to do whatever they wanted with the game and not get bogged down with trying to justify it all.

And as I remember there were some people that were willing to rip the makers of Escape a new one just because everything on Mêlée wasn't exactly where it had been in the first game.
I can read minds, but it's pointless because I'm illiterate.

That is a very good point. The new setting works reasonably well, I didn't know about the Escape issues, but the things aren't the same place (the Island isn't even in the same shape). I do agree though, it was a good move to have new islands. Escape seemed weird adding more islands to the Tri-Island area, which I always assumed meant three islands....
