Having trouble installing MI2 on XP, Please help!!!

Postby Ewan JF » Tue Sep 28, 2010 10:19 pm

Right, as the title says I'm having trouble installing Monkey Island 2 (the floppy version) to my computer. Yes, I know it's a DOS game and I have just downloaded ScummVM. The problem is, the FAQ on there tells me to copy these files " * MONKEY2.000
* MONKEY2.001 " on to the computer then add them onto Scumm.

I cannot find these 2 files at all on any of the 5 floppys. Also, ScummVM FAQ is saying: "For some games the files are packed and not directly accessible on the floppy or CD. In such a case you will need to run the original game installer and then copy the files from where they have been installed to the directory in which you want to install the game to play with ScummVM."
BUT I cannot install it since I can't find anything that can run the installation file (which is a MS-DOS Batch File) at all.
I apologise if this si a common question, I'm not good when it comes to these old program names and such. Help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks :M

Just for clarification, you cannot get the BAT file to execute? What Operating System are you currently running? If it's Windows, have you tried running it through command prompt? If you're on Linux or OS X, try DOSBox (which would also work in Windows as well). Let me know how that goes and we can try to take it from there.

Cannot get the BAT file to execute. It flashes up with a screen but disappears as soon as it shows so I can't install it the easy proper way.
I'm currently running Windows XP.
I have not tried command prompt yet since I have difficulty using it.
Just installed DOSBox but I'm honestly completely lost with working it since this is all new to me (you got to start from somewhere).
If this isn't much toa sk for can you talk me through what commands I'd need to go through to run the INSTALL.MS-DOS file on DOSBox.
I feel like a complete twonk with all this.
I honestly appreciate a reply! I was doubting I'd ever get one!

Sorry for the long delay on the response, I have been pretty busy the past week. Since you're using Win XP then I would say just to use command prompt as opposed to DOSBox (I suggested DOSBox just in case you weren't using Windows).

Anyways, I don't have a copy of Windows (or a floppy drive to try it) but it should be pretty straightforward. Just put the first disk in and then load up command prompt and type:
A: <enter>
install.bat <enter> (or whatever the bat filename is)

With those lines, I am assuming that your floppy drive is A: (not sure why it would be anything else). That should get the installer running through command prompt and it should then give you instructions what to do from there. It shouldn't be much more than just inserting the next disk after it tells you to, although I haven't installed from the floppies in quite a while. Believe it or not I somehow managed to keep my original installs of both MI games in tact from when I was a kid (see, it pays to be a pack rat sometimes, haha). Good luck with it. Let me know how it goes from there.
