Forums back up! Posted by: Dalixam | Comments (0)
The forums are back in all their glory! Unfortunatly, all posts posted after September 8, have been lost. I'm sorry, but this could not be prevented and I also mentioned it back in September. Users who signed up after September 8, will also have to sign up again. Despite the loss of these posts I hope you will enjoy the return of the forums :) See you there!

We're back! Posted by: Dalixam | Comments (0)
Believe it or not, We're back!
After almost four months of downtime The World of Monkey Island has risen from the ashes! Please spread the word :) If you don't know why we have been gone please check this page, which explains it briefly.

I have lots of updates ready and there are many things to explain, so we'll start slowly. First off is the improved design, which you have probably already noticed. Paco has been busy these past months with improving the design and we have finally added a background color, which so many have been asking for :) It's more pleasing to the eyes and we hope you enjoy it.

The forums need a little more work, but they will be back shortly.

As mentioned earlier, I have many updates ready, but I don't want to update it all at once and I also want to give people a chance to find out that the site is back online before I add anything.

However, we have a late Christmas present for you all: I am happy to announce that page 4,5, & 6, of Paco's MI1 comic will be available on Saturday!

That's it for the first news post in almost four months. Posts with more explanations, announcements, and updates will follow.

Welcome back!

Forums are working again Posted by: Dalixam | Comments (0)
The forums are now working again. Somehow the tables got corrupted and that caused the problems. Everything seems to be working again, but threads that received a reply on Friday the 24th or Saturday the 25th are corrupted and can no longer be replied to. They can still be read although the very last reply is inaccessible. Other than that, the forums should be back to normal :)

Interactive fan novel Posted by: Dalixam | Comments (0)
Fiona Bunny has written a new fan novel entitled MI5: The Cutthtroats of Monkey Island. The novel differs from other fan novels because it is interactive, meaning that you decide how the story should progress and what the characters should do and say. The novel isn't complete yet, but new stuff is often added as it is frequently updated. Check out the story here and let the adventure begin!

A, Monkey Island short story Posted by: Dalixam | Comments (0)
Rick Talbot asked me to mention a short story he has written called "Enter The Dark Monkey". Unlike other Monkey Island stories this is darkly serious and morbidly noir. You can read the story here

The International House of Mojo (Our dear host) is auctioning some Escape from Monkey Island and other LucasArts stuff on eBay to raise money to help pay their monthly server bills. You can check out the auctions here, but as I am reporting this news a bit late (I apologize for that) the auctions are pretty close to ending. However, Mixnmojo plans to auction off more stuff in the future.

LucasArts goes classic Posted by: Dalixam | Comments (0)
LucasArts has not forgotten their classic games as you can see from their "Hint of the Week", which gives the solution on how to win the spitting contest in LeChuck's Revenge.

The have also posted a Quick-Path Walkthrough for the PS2 version of MI4, but I assume it can be used for the PC version as well.

LucasArts moves Posted by: Dalixam | Comments (0)
LucasFilm, LucasArts, Industrial Light & Magic, THX Group, Lucas Online, and the George Lucas Educational Fund will be moving into new facilities. Here is the full articles:

Lucasfilm Ltd. has signed an agreement to build a 23-acre office and film production center at the Presidio, a former Army base. The company's plans call for a 900,000-square-foot campus for 2,500 workers. Officials with the Presidio Trust had been courting the film company for more than two years. Lucasfilm special effects and post-production company, Industrial Light & Magic, along with THX Group, Lucas Arts Entertainment Co., Lucas Online and the George Lucas Educational Fund, will all move to the Presidio location. The Lucasfilm companies will occupy the site of the Letterman Army Hospital after the 10-story building's demolition. The Presidio Trust must meet Congress' goal of becoming financially self-sufficient by 2013.

PC Gamer''s Top 50 Posted by: Dalixam | Comments (0)
PC Gamer has published a list of their choices as the 50 best games ever. The Monkey Island series took the #36 spot. Here is a quote from the article:

Why is it on the list? Can you think of a funnier, more distinguished adventure series? How'd they come up with that stuff? Writer/programmer Tim Schafer reveals: "When [co-writer/programmer] Dave Grossman and I started writing dialogue for the first game, we were just writing dumb jokes to crack each other up and pass time. I thought Ron [Gilbert] would rewrite it and make it sound more like 'game dialogue.' But he didn't. He left it. And in the end, it was great." Best Monkey Island ever? "What's always struck me as funny is the response to the newest Monkey game," notes Monkey 4 project lead Sean Clark. "The newest one is always 'not as good as the rest.' That is, until the next one comes out - then the previous one is 'the best ever.' What's next? Schafer launched Double Fine Productions, and is developing an action/adventure game for the Xbox. And Sean Clark? "Monkey 5! Okay, not really."

News and quote grabbed from Mixnmojo.

MI1 comic by Paco Vink Posted by: Dalixam | Comments (0)
I'm sure you are familiar with the artist Paco Vink, who draws some amazing Monkey Island pictures. He has drawn several images for this site including the design and now he has out done himself by creating a comic based on The Secret of Monkey Island. The drawings are a joy to look at and it makes me wish I had a color printer :) So far Paco Vink has made the front page, page 1, and page 2 and you can see them all below or in the comics section. More pages will be added frequently as Paco finishes them.
It is with great honor that I present this comic and I hope you will enjoy it!

EMI cutscene music Posted by: Dalixam | Comments (0)
Clint Bajakian, who was the head composer on Escape from Monkey Island, has several samples of the game music he has made available for download from his company's website; CB Studios. Until now, you've been able to download a 37 seconds sample of the music in the "Final Showdown" cutscene from Escape from Monkey Island, but Clint Bajakian has now replaced that sample with the entire 7 minute music piece! The MP3 is 9.73 MB and can be downloaded here.

Downloads back up! Posted by: Dalixam | Comments (0)
The downloads are working again and this new FTP server is also better than the old one I had. You no longer have to go through a lot of clicking to get a file, now you just download it the normal way :)

The midis section has been revised a bit. Instead of listing every single midi available, all midis by the same author is now placed together in one zip file.

The MP3s are still down though, because I am working on making lots more available for download, so there is no point in uploading the few old MP3s before the new ones are ready.

    Enjoy the downloads :)

New fan novel based on MI1 Posted by: Dalixam | Comments (0)
Jonathan Hardesty has written a fan novel based on The Secret of Monkey Island. The novel doesn't follow the game directly, but it is very good and very well written. Part 1 is the prologue and the first trial. Here is a snippet:

I had finally made it into the town limits and heard a loud crash coming from a small building not too far off. There were men laughing and more crashing sounds as I kept coming closer. Upon looking at the wind and rain torn, wooden sign, I realized that this was the SCUMM BAR; the red painted words speaking so forth. At first I was hesitant to enter, as all I was wearing was this English suite comprised of knickers (skintight) and a silky white shirt that had a U neck with some cloth hanging out English style. To this I thought what the hay and entered casually.

Upon inspection of the bar, I saw a great many things that my eyes had never experienced in my sheltered, pampered, and rich young life. I saw fat women carrying large plates with mugs of some substance on them to slovenly looking men who could barely lift their heads to say a thank you ma’am. Each pirate had his own unique odor, when combined meant death. It was enough to make me sick. There was a man playing a piano in the back who looked like he knew what he was doing. I would have talked to the guy, but he stopped suddenly and jumped off of his 3-foot stool, revealing his midget-ness! I decided NOT to talk to him.

Read the entire first part of this well written novel here.

CMI inspiration Posted by: Dalixam | Comments (0)
Our custom art designer and my good friend Paco Vink stumbled across some interesting pictures as he was browsing through the book called "Pirates: an illustrated history of privateers, buccaneers, and pirates from the sixteenth century to the present" by David Cordingly. If you look at the two pictures below and compare them to the CMI screenshots it is clear to see where the designers on The Curse of Monkey Island got some of their inspiration from.

In this week's article Robin Leach wonders if Monkey Island would survive in a diferent genre. Here is a snippet:

Would Monkey Island be able to survive outside of the Adventure genre? If you did a radical flip to another genre ‘ala Kings Quest 8 (Which I will probably refer to many times in this article) would Monkey Island be able to survive as a series? Are the fans loyal enough to stay behind their beloved series even if it was to take a radical turn in another direction?

Serge, author of Scumm Revisited, has now officially left the program and all work related to it. This means that there will probably never be a new version of Scumm Revisited. The good news is that Serge has released the source code to v2.0.11.43, so if you are interested you can continue his work. Head over to LucasHacks for more info and to download the source code.

PS2 and PC differences Posted by: Dalixam | Comments (0)
The International House of Mojo has posted an article which compares the PS2 version of Escape from Monkey Island with the PC version. Here is a snippet:

The character models during the game play are also improved, but you can really only see the difference when the characters are very close to the screen. For example, many of the polygons in Guybrush's hair seem smoother and rounded off.

Weekly article Posted by: Dalixam | Comments (0)
In this week's article Philip Hooks & Paul Creasy discuss the pros and cons of Escape from Monkey Island against Grim Fandango. Here is a snippet:

Another bonus for Grim is the following. In EMI, Pegnose Pete the villain gets his “justice” by being Ultimate Insulted and told to take a long walk off a short pier. This is not satisfying enough for someone we really want to see in pain. In Grim however, we see the truly evil and snide Domino Hurley crushed in graphic detail with a blood-curdling scream to boot and the gangster Hector LeMans sprouted into a hideous bloated corpse.

New fan novel Posted by: Dalixam | Comments (0)
A new chapter of Victoria Kidston's wonderful fan novel "Every Grog Has Its Day" has been added. Chapter 3 is entitled Cheating Death and here is a snippet:

Guybrush ignored Murray’s first statement, knowing he could prove him wrong if he could only find his library card… yet then he saw why Murray had given him the warning. All around, ghosts and ghouls alike were gulping down the pungent liquid, but it didn’t stay in them for long. Dark, steaming puddles tattooed the floor where they stood, blistered wood slowly giving ways to holes as the grog worked its wicked way through the boards. Like a wave crashing against a briny beach, the realization broke over Guybrush. “It’s as if they’re just pouring it on themselves. You can’t taste it, can you?” he hissed curiously at Murray.

    PS2 MI4 review Posted by: Dalixam | Comments (0)
IGN.com has published a review of the PlayStation 2 version of Escape from Monkey Island. Here is a snippet:

As far as visual quality goes, there's nothing to complain about here, save for that brief chopping effect caused by the sound loading now and again. The game looks as good as it would on an expensive PC system, although this never was intended to be a big-deal 3D card showcase. Everything is displayed in crisp high resolution, and the animation is quite satisfactory.

In this week's Top 10 article Orie House lists his choices as the 10 most out of place things in the Monkey Island games. Here is a snippet:

    #3
    Cannons with too much Technology

The cannons you get near the end of the ship to ship combat part of CMI are out of place because they have satellites and fax modems. You can not tell me these belong on a classic wood pirate ship. All right they’re cool, but do they belong? No. It was number three because I think the twirling satellite in the background with the ship is very strange.

LucasArts poll Posted by: Dalixam | Comments (0)
LucasArts has put up a poll that asks " Which of the following fan sites do you visit most often?". For some unexplainable reason you can't vote for this site (I curse you LucasArts!), but you can vote for many other great sites.

Lost interview Posted by: Dalixam | Comments (0)
The site .gamegeek.peeks. has published an interview with Jonathan Ackley and Larry Ahern which was conducted in 1997 prior to the release of The Curse of Monkey Island. Originally, the interview was available on www.videogamedesign.com, but that site does no longer exist so .gamegeek.peeks. decided to publish the interview along with several other lost interviews.

Even though it's not a new interview it is still interesting to read what the project leaders had to say about the game before it was released.

Thanks to h01 for the news.

We've moved! Posted by: Dalixam | Comments (0)
As you probably know, Adventure Gamer moved away from their domain www.adventuregamer.com to their new address at www.adventuregamers.com, but unfortunately they are not able to host sites on their new server. Therefore, I started to look for a new host and found one :)

The move has now happened and we are now hosted by The International House of Mojo. Everything should be working, but if you find a broken link, a missing image, or something else please mail me so I can correct it :)

The downloads are not up and running yet, but they soon will be and they will be using a different system than before so downloading will much easier, but more about that when they are available :)

The forum has not yet packed its bags either, but you know me, I'm working hard to get it ready :)

I would like to thank Adventure Gamer for hosting The World of Monkey Island in the last 19 months. The staff and especially Marek have always been nice to me and it has been a pleasure being part of their network.

At the same time I would also like to thank The International House of Mojo for taking this site under their wings when it needed a new home :) I am happy to join the Mixnmojo Network and I look forward to many new and exciting adventures with them :)

Insult Arm Wrestling Posted by: Dalixam | Comments (0)
Just like they added the "Pirate Name Calculator" a few days ago, LucasArts has come up with more crazy stuff to promote the PS2 version of Escape from Monkey Island. They have now added an online version of the Insult Arm Wrestling scene to the Monkey Island 4 Product Page so you can arm wrestle I. Cheese online :)

Weekly article Posted by: Dalixam | Comments (0)
This week's article is by Robin Leach and talks about something we probably all have...fond memories about Monkey Island. Here is a snippet:

The next few hours unfolded in an experience irrelevant to all other games before it. Spending the entire night on it, insult sword fighting for an hour just for the fun of it, wrestling for control of the mouse, the memory of the night is still inscribed upon my brain this day. This is what a remember Monkey Island games for.

Reading the article certainly brought back lots of my own memories...*sniff* :) Read the entire article here and send your own memories to Robin Leach.

Joe Townsend, author of the fan novel The nightmare of Monkey Island, has started writing another fan novel entitled "Voodoo Alive". Part 1: Resurrection is available now and here is a snippet:

"Guybrush... have you been down that scumm bar AGAIN?" Came the voice of Elaine Marley Threepwood, telling off her husband, the 'Incredible' Guybrush Threepwood, who gave a reply...
"Of courssse not, dear. #hic# What makes you say that? I'm as sssssober as a drunken master boxer! #hic# Whatever that is." SMACK! Elaine gave Guybrush yet another punch. Guybrush fell onto the floor,
and woke up the next morning.

In this week's article Harry Carr expresses his opinion on how and if adventure games will survive among multiplayer games in the future.
    Here is a snippet:

And so as the future of gaming becomes more concerned with online deatmatches and league tables, where will this leave the awkwardly one-player experience that adventure game like Monkey Island offer us? The answer is probably not one you’ll care to acknowledge.

Some people may not have completed the game yet, so I won't reveal any more here on the front page. This week's article is a little different from the regular articles. This time Philip Hooks has taken the opportunity to discuss whether or not MI4 should appear on the PlayStation2 with his friend Paul Creasy. It's interesting to read as they both have interesting viewpoints.
    Here is a snippet:

Anyway, I’m not sure what Lucasarts hope to gain from releasing the cream of their gamely crop on a dying console like the PS2. Rather like jumping on the Titanic as it went down, don’t you think?

Bill Tiller interview Posted by: Dalixam | Comments (0)
The Scumm Bar has posted an exclusive interview with Bill Tiller who was the background artist on The Curse of Monkey Island. The interview is very long and interesting. Weekly article Posted by: Dalixam | Comments (0)
Due to some unforseen problems there was no article last week and due to other problems this week's article is a bit late. I apologize. This week's article is a Top 10 written by our newest writer Orie House. The Top 10 covers insults and comebacks and here is a snippet:

Your hemorrhoids are flaring up again, eh?: I think this is a very funny one, in fact I know a lot of people who do. That is mainly why it is on the list, of course. But it was placed high because to me it just seems very witty. The writer should be given a dog biscuit.

You can download the MP3 here. (You must left-click on the link. Right-clicking won't work.)

    Mixnmojo's E3 coverage Posted by: Dalixam | Comments (0)
The International House of Mojo has been present at this year's E3 and they have managed to get some juicy info :)

On day 2 they posted an article containing a little information about Escape from Monkey Island. One of the things is that Mike Stemmle and Sean Clark weren't completely happy with Elaine's voice.

On day 4 they posted an interview with Simon Jeffery, the president of LucasArts, and Tom Sarris. It contains much informatíon about future adventures from LucasArts and a bit about Monkey Island. When asked about enhanced versions of MI1 and MI2 they answered:

I think one day when we've got some time on our hands, that's exactly the kind of thing we'd like to do. But I think we've got a little too much on our plate at the moment.

New fan novel Posted by: Dalixam | Comments (0)
Jiah Peck has written a great fan novel entitled Murray’s Story of Evil and Destruction which tell the story of Murray. Chapter 1: Becoming Undead is available now. Here is a snippet:

My friends and fellow crew, Ron and Tim, were pirates, just like almost everyone in the Caribbean. We had a good life. A robbery here, a kidnapping there, and every so often blackmail. We had just gotten back from Lucre Island with a shipment of…well, lucre. As we cruised in our ship, The Destructive Ferry, Ron had just received a flyer about a new carnival.

Chapter two of Victoria Kidston's new fan novel Every Grog Has Its Day is now available. Here is a snippet:

Murray offered a toothy grin. “Eeeeeee,” he beamed.

“I don’t know, Murray,” Guybrush teased, “that’s a bit cruel of you. All those women are going to be ripping each other’s arms off to get to you when they see how wickedly dashing you are.”
“Gee thanks, Guybrush,” Murray growled happily as they approached the doorway to the party. “You really know how to flatter a body.”

New fan novel Posted by: Dalixam | Comments (0)
There is a new fan novel available by Victoria Kidston, the author of the hugely popular fan novel "Secret Revealed". The new novel is called "Every Grog Has Its Day" and is just as exciting, interesting and well written as the first one. The first chapter is called: Another Day in the Caribbean and here is a snippet:

“I blame that on the side effects from the sushi.” The Scumm Bar might have been reverted back to its better grog-swilling, salt-drenched self, but all the patrons decided they liked the daring idea of eating raw fish. Not to mention that the little umbrellas made them feel tiki-riffic.
Guybrush watched as the pirate peg-legged off, leaving him and Elaine to themselves. Nothing wrong with that, but Guybrush was going to have to talk Elaine into letting him go out that night.

Read the complete chapter one here.
Chapter two will be available tomorrow.

Weekly article Posted by: Dalixam | Comments (0)
In this weeks article Harry Carr takes a look at how much reality is used in games and how much the games can get away with. Here is a snippet:

On the whole, reality is subjective – some of the most sublime moments in Escape from Monkey Island come from wholly un-real situations. My personal favourite is when you first travel on the boat, and a surprise character seems to be getting over friendly with the former sword master… it’s a classic moment, yet it represents a total lack of reality, and maybe a total lack of the need for reality.

Weekly article Posted by: Dalixam | Comments (0)
Due to some technical problems the weekly article was a day delayed. This week, Philip Hooks, takes a look at how the fans welcome new installments in the Monkey Island series. This is certainly a relevant topic and I agree on many of the points. Here is a snippet:

Monkey Island is clearly a best-selling series and a sparkling addition to Lucasarts’ already impressive back-catalogue of titles, however there is one problem that a lot of us fans have with the series. Whenever
a new addition to the Monkey Island series is released, fans find it hard to accept the game as a worthy sequel because they don’t like the changes made from the previous adventure.

PS2 box art Posted by: Dalixam | Comments (0)
EBgames.com has published the box art for the upcoming PlayStation 2 version of Escape from Monkey Island. There is some debat as to how Guybrush and Elaine look. Guybrush looks a bit more masculine and they appear to be in the middle of a fight. This may be done on purpose to make the box appeal more to the PS2 market which consists mostly of action games.
    Judge for yourself:

New design! Posted by: Dalixam | Comments (0)
Just when you thought you have seen it all we surprise you again! What started out as a minor re-design of the main page ended up giving the site a totally new look. The World of Monkey Island has never looked better and it's all thanks to the amazingly talented artist Paco Vink. He has worked very hard to make this design and it's turned out fantastic.

There are still a few minor details that need to be fixed and corrected, but I just couldn't wait any longer to show you the new design :) As you can see to the right, a new feature is coming in two days and it's going to be a big addition to The World of Monkey Island, so I hope you'll check back on Tuesday and see what it is :)

I hope you like and appreciate the design and the work that has been put into it. Feel free to send any comments to me, the web master, to Paco Vink, the artist behind these great drawings, or write your comments in the guestbook.

In this week's article Robin Leach takes a look at what exactly makes the Monkey Island games so special. Here is a snippet:

Could it be the humor that makes the Monkey Island series so beloved in our hearts? Many say It is the back-bone of the games. Would you still buy Monkey Island 5, if they removed all humor from the game and left the seemingly difficult (and often Impossible) puzzles and a still solid plot?.

Weekly article Posted by: Dalixam | Comments (0)
This week's article is written by Harry Carr. He expresses his view on the combination of graphics and gameplay in today's games. Here is a snippet:

My Monkey Island 1 CD is just that – one CD. Yet arguably, it contains a longer experience than the two discs of Monkey Island 4 do. Where does all this space go? It’s obvious on comparison – voice acting, a third dimension, music, FMV and actual sound effects predictably accompany the latest installment of the saga. And yet in this ‘progress’, a shorter game has been produced.

Starting today, a new article dealing with Monkey Island and the adventure genre will be featured on this site every Monday. To create these articles, four writers have joined The World of Monkey Island staff and they are Boyd Mayberry, Harry Carr, Philip Hooks, and Robin Leach.

To launch this new feature is an article by Philip Hooks entitled Monkey Island: More Holes than one of Stan's Used Ships? in which he takes a closer look at the storylines linking the Monkey Island games together. Here is a snippet:

Lucasarts stated that Jojo’s recently deceased father was the Monkey left hanging from the Totem Pole from MI1. If that last sentence confused you then you’ll have an idea of how I felt playing MI4. Why Jojo Jr? Why not Bob Jr? Colin Jr? Edward Jr? Booboo Jr? What’s wrong with Lucasarts? Are all the monkeys in the MI series called Jojo? All the fans know that Jojo was a piano playing monkey in MI2, not the one that aided you in MI1.

Read the full article here and check back next Monday for a new article.

No more pop-ups Posted by: Dalixam | Comments (0)
For months this site has been plagued by occasional advertising pop-ups. This was not intentionally or acknowledged by me, but simply caused by the use of a free counter provided by a company, who was responsible for these pop-ups.
However, the pop-ups are no more. The counter has been removed and the pop-ups will not bother any visitors anymore.

I apologize for any inconvenience they may have caused.

More LucasArts adventures? Posted by: Dalixam | Comments (0)
At IGN, Randy Breen (Vice President of Development) and Tom Sarris (Public Relations Director) talked about the partnership between LucasArts and Ensemble Studios. There were also a little time to discuss adventure games:

IGNPC: Well we were just talking over here about how much we'd like to see a sequel to Full Throttle or another installment of the Maniac Mansion or Sam & Max series.
Randy Breen: You haven't been the first to say that.

IGNPC: I'm sure. It's a shame that the adventure market isn't as strong in the US as it once was.
Randy Breen: Well Monkey Island's doing pretty well, and it's doing exceptionally well in Europe. I think you're likely to see some more of those products in the future.

This certainly sounds promising. Hopefully LucasArts will announce some new adventures at the upcoming E3 show.

MI4 end explanation Posted by: Dalixam | Comments (0)
Some may find the end of Escape from Monkey Island a bit weird and illogic. (I know I did :), but Wizzard419@... emailed me and explained it to me. To avoid ruining the game for anyone who have not completed it yet I have "hidden" the explanation below. Highlight the text below to read it.

The 3 draws destroy LeChuck because when he lowers his arms on the 3rd draw Elaine escapes and Ozzie gets mad, and the power from the Ultimate Insult wears out. Ozzie doesn't have enough time to try and get LeChuck under his control again. LeChuck smashes Ozzie and the Ultimate Insult causing the power to be released all at once and causing the explosion that destroys him.
